Some sarees are beautifully understated. Paalum Pazhamum is a celebration of colour.
This vibrant Kanchipuram silk weave brings together multiple coloured silk threads to create rich, woven checks across the saree. For those of us living in Australia and the USA, it is also a beautiful way to stay connected to heritage while wearing something that feels timeless, festive and wonderfully unique.

What is Paalum Pazhamum?
Paalum Pazhamum is a colourful expression of Kanchipuram kattam, or checked weaving.
While a simpler Kanchi Kattam may use two colours to create checks, Paalum Pazhamum introduces multiple colours — sometimes four, six, eight or more — resulting in a vibrant, multi-coloured checked body.
It is not a completely separate weaving technique from Kanchi Kattam. The principle remains the same: coloured silk threads intersect in the warp and weft to create checks. What changes is the number of colours involved, the complexity of the planning and the extraordinary richness of the finished saree.
How is Paalum Pazhamum woven?
The weaving of a Paalum Pazhamum saree begins at the warping stage, before a single thread crosses the loom. The weaver must plan the colour sequence in both warp and weft — the exact order in which the differently coloured silk threads will be wound onto the warp beam, and the order in which the weft threads will pass across them during weaving.
In a simple Paalum Pazhamum with three colours — say arakku red, bottle green and mustard yellow — the warp sequence might be carefully arranged with each colour repeating across the full width of the saree. The weft sequence might mirror this exactly, or use a different arrangement to create a different check geometry.
Where an arakku red warp thread crosses an arakku red weft thread, the check reads strongly as red. Where an arakku red warp thread crosses a bottle green weft thread, however, the colours visually interact, creating a subtle mixed tone. This beautiful blending of colours within the woven squares is one of the most distinctive characteristics of Paalum Pazhamum.
In a more complex Paalum Pazhamum using eight or more colours, these intersections can create extraordinary visual richness. Multiple silk colours interact across hundreds of thousands of intersections, creating tones and variations that a printed textile simply cannot replicate.
The complexity of planning and warping such a saree is significant. The weaver must carefully manage the colour sequence, thread tension and rhythm of the checks throughout the entire length of the saree.
The traditional border — and Tamara Weaves’ interpretation
Traditionally, a Paalum Pazhamum saree often chooses one key colour from the threads as its anchor colour.
That colour then carries into a classic korvai border, with the pallu and blouse usually finished in the same colour. The result is a rich and traditional interpretation of this beautiful weave.
Tamara Weaves takes a slightly different approach with its Paalum Pazhamum saree.
Instead of adding a broad and elaborate korvai border, this saree features a simple, subtle zari line border of approximately one inch in thickness. The blouse is a beautiful arakku red with delicate buttas.
This gives the saree a quieter, more contemporary elegance.
The colourful Paalum Pazhamum checks remain the hero, while the subtle border keeps the overall look from becoming too busy. The result is a statement saree that is still incredibly easy to style for different occasions.
Tamara Weaves’ Paalum Pazhamum Saree
Our Paalum Pazhamum kattam pure Kanchipuram silk saree is woven in a striking combination of bottle green, arakku and mustard yellow.
Large peacock or mayil and chakram woven zari buttas sit beautifully within the checks, adding another layer of traditional Kanchipuram craftsmanship.
The subtle zari border and rich arakku blouse create balance, allowing the colours and intricate weaving to shine without overwhelming the saree.
It is traditional, but not overly formal.
Colourful, but beautifully balanced.
And a saree that can be styled in many different ways.
When can you wear a Paalum Pazhamum saree?
Paalum Pazhamum is naturally festive and works beautifully for:
- Diwali and Navaratri celebrations
- Onam and Vishu
- Indian weddings and engagements
- Temple and cultural events
- Classical music and dance performances
- Family celebrations and milestone occasions
For those living in Australia and the USA, these sarees are especially lovely for the moments when we come together as a community and celebrate our culture.
A saree with colour, craftsmanship and character
The beauty of Paalum Pazhamum lies in the fact that every check is created through the actual structure of the weave.
The colours are not simply printed onto fabric. They are planned, threaded and woven together by skilled hands.
That is what makes a handwoven Kanchipuram saree so special.
It is craftsmanship you can wear, celebrate in and eventually pass on with your own memories attached to it.
